What is paint?

     Paint is a liquid material which, when applied on a substrate. turns into a solid adhering film that forms a protective and or decorative coating. The main components of which are:

     The BINDER is the continuos phase of the paint film in which the pigments and extenders are distributed, and is the component which has most influence on the characteristics of the paint regarding during/ curing, adhesion, hardness, strength, resistance to chemicals etc. Therefore the type of binder is generally used to describe the generic type of the paint, e.g. alkyd, epoxy and chlorinated rubber paints. Binders are developed by polymer chemists who carefully react raw materials selected from the chemical industry. Natural materials still play an important part as components in some of present day binders such as Soya oil and linseed oil.

     The BIGMENTS are small particles of solid materials which are distributed in the paint. The main function of pigments is to give the paint color, hiding power (opacity) to protect the binder against deterioration

from the ultraviolet rays of the sunlight and to obscure the substrate undercoat, improve weather resistance, increase paint adhesion, control gloss and decrease degree of moisture penetration (permeability)

    

          The EXTENDERS are natural or synthetic minerals such as kaolin, chalk, talc, clay slate dust etc. the main functions of extenders are to reinforce the paint film , increasing viscosity and give the paint the correct gloss

         

          The SOLVENTS are responsible for the viscosity and for the application properties. The paints solvents must be volatile so that it evaporates from a coating of paint to leave a viscous film.

         

          The ADDITIVES    A long range of additives are at the disposal of today’s paint manufacturer. Some are used to ensure a better and safer production; other to increase shelf life, reduce drying time, counteract runs and sags, or in other ways enhance desired properties.
